A Nairn man who ran amok in the town armed with a metal crowbar was jailed for a year at Inverness Sheriff Court yesterday.
John Robertson, 28, who lived at Kirkville Flats in Queen Street, terrorised the town centre on the afternoon of January 2 last year.
Sheriff Margaret Neilson was told that CCTV recorded Robertson at about 3pm.
Fiscal Roderick Urquhart told the court: “At this time he was wearing a black “hoodie” with the hood up and a white bandana covering his face.
“He then took a crowbar from out of his trousers and walked into the middle of the roadway where he struck the ground with it and was heard to shout “What are you going to do about it?”
“He then walked on to the middle of the roadway on Cawdor Street toward High Street, with the crowbar still in his hand before approaching an unidentified male, and brandished the crowbar at him.
“This unidentified man ran west on Cawdor Street with Robertson pursuing him. Police were called and Robertson adopted an aggressive stance and gestured toward people on Cawdor Street.
“About 3.10 p.m. that afternoon, one of the accused’s neighbours, a 17 year old female, was in her home at Kirkville Flats, when she heard her doorbell ring.
“On looking through the peep hole she saw Robertson who exclaimed something along the lines of either “Make sure the security door to the block is locked or I will kill you!” or “I’ve told you to close that security door. I am going to kill you!”
“He then proceeded to bang on the door to the flat with his fists. About a minute later, Police constables arrived at Kirkville Flats and he was found standing outside. He was detained and the constables found the crowbar on the living room floor of his flat.”
Defence agent Duncan Henderson said: “This incident lasted a little over ten minutes and did not escalate. He has struggled in adult life with drink and drugs and can’t explain the events that day as he has little recollection of them.”
Jailing him, Sheriff Neilson told Robertson: “You have a bad record and only a custodial sentence is appropriate.”
Robertson admitted a charge of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner.
She backdated it to January 5 when he was remanded in custody.
