MSP’s meetings on island to discuss infrastructure concerns

A north MSP has described the “incredible” situation where no rooms are available on Skye, acocrding to her searches.

Kate Forbes is holding a series of meetings and surgeries with local people, businesses and councillors on the island during her summer constituency tour.

They are being held ahead of a visit from Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Tourism, later this year.

Ms Forbes said: “It is quite incredible going onto accommodation websites and seeing that there are no rooms available anywhere on the island.

“Skye is an increasingly popular destination and this is putting ageing infrastructure under huge strain.

“I fully empathise with the some of the disgusting behaviour on Skye because of the lack of toilets and amenities. But in Kyle, for example, there are fully functioning toilets which are well-maintained and only require a small contribution by users.

“This is something which I’d like to see across Skye.”

The local MSP added: “There has been no preparation for the success of tourism on the island. There has been very little forward-thinking in terms of upgrading infrastructure, but the solution won’t happen overnight.

“Roads, parking and toilets are three immediate priorities. We need to share the load across the year and across the island so that tourists choose to come throughout the year and contribute to every corner of Skye.

“I am working with other groups like SkyeConnect and public bodies to draft a strategy for the island.”

As part of her constituency tour, Ms Forbes will be visiting Fort William on Friday, August 18.
