Operators of Scatsta Airport say they will object plans for a 63 turbine wind farm on the island of Yell due to safety concerns.
Serco, a provider of public services, insist the 200MW wind farm could cause communication problems with planes and helicopters approaching to and climbing out from the North Mainland airport.
It is also concerned that the turbines with a hub height of up to 100 metres could generate unwanted clutter on air traffic control display screens.
Writing in a letter, airport director John Thorne said: “The location of the turbines would be directly aligned with the flight path to the Magnus offshore installation, among others.
“The development may have a significant impact on the final approach track and climb out, requiring amendment to the instrument flight procedures.”
Serco also noted that there was insufficient information provided in order to enable proper assessments of the application.
