A grieving Western Isles mother has paid tribute to her “talented and loving” footballer son who died suddenly on New Year’s Day.

Jordan Macleod, 20, of Stornoway, is understood to have taken drugs before his death in his home town. It is thought he had been at a party.

Police are investigating but said there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances.

Last night Mr Macleod’s mother, Chrissie Macleod, said: “He was at home for the bells and dancing and I wished him a happy new year. He left at about 12.40pm, and I never saw him again.

“He was a talented footballer and a loving son, and he loved his wee brothers, 16-year-old twins Craig and Cameron, and four-year-old Johnross. He was a loving nephew, grandson and friend to many.”

Ms Macleod said her son, who worked locally as a welder and supported Manchester United and Glasgow Rangers, started off playing football at Stornoway United.

He started playing for Carloway Football Club at the start of last season and was part of a team which won the Lewis and Harris League in September.

Carloway Football Club also paid tribute to their young player and sent condolences to his family and friends.

A statement posted on their social media page read: “Jordan made a massive impact in his time with Carloway and a big contribution towards the club’s league title success. His personality, commitment and ability shone through and players, management and fans all took the wee man to heart.

“The reaction of the players and crowd when he scored his first goal for the club up in Ness said everything about how we felt about him. Rest in peace wee Jordy.”

Stornoway United also paid tribute. Their statement read: “It’s hard to express how deeply sad we all feel for the passing our friend, Jordan Macleod.

“Jordy was always a team player when he with us at junior level. He always played with a shining smile on his face and we were very proud to have him play alongside us.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and can only hope that a little ease can come from knowing how highly thought of Jordy was by us all. Keep shining, Jordy.”

Both messages have drawn a huge reaction on social media, with tributes and messages of condolence flooding in for Mr Macleod’s family.

Underneath the tribute from Carloway FC, Andrew Macleod poignantly wrote: “Quality Player. Quality Person.”

One of Mr Macleod’s relatives, Tina Macleod, wrote: “Thank you for your kind words, means a lot to his family.”

A police spokesman said: “Police Scotland was made aware of the sudden death of a 20-year-old man at an address in the Cearn Fhloaidh area on the Isle of Lewis at about 4.15pm on Monday, January 1.”
