A cafe, aimed at breaking down the taboo around menopause, will be held in Elgin later this month.

The event will increase awareness of the impact of the condition on those experiencing it and how it can often impact on their family, friends and colleagues.

It will be open to both male and female participants of all ages and will be held between 2pm and 4pm on July 28 in the Grampian Coffee House.

The event is being organised by Karen Kenning, co-founder of the Pausitivity group raising awareness of menopause symptoms through the #KnowYourMenopause poster campaign, who has said she wants to encourage people to talk about their different experiences through their change of life.

She said: “I am really excited to be bringing Menopause Café to Moray. I hope that it will encourage people to come and chat all things menopause.

“Be ready for tears and laughs.”

The world’s first menopause cafe meeting was held in Perth in 2017 and, in the intervening period, a number of similar events have been organised throughout the United Kingdon, including in some workplaces.

In addition to these one-off sessions, the world’s inaugural menopause festival was also held in Perth during 2018.

Rachel Weiss of Rowan Consultancy, who founded the menopause cafe, said: “This is aimed at women and men of all ages who would like to come along and talk about the menopause, to share their stories, experiences and questions, and all of that will be made a little bit easier with tea and cake.

“People can come along and just listen, or join in on the discussions, hopefully leaving with a clearer sense of the impact of the menopause on those who are experiencing it, alongside their families, friends and colleagues.”
