A Lossiemouth man who died while diving off the Moray coast has been described as “lovely” family man.

Benjamin Rayner was in shallow waters a few hundred yards from Findochty harbour when he got into difficulties last Sunday.

The 38-year-old quantity surveyor was pulled from the water by an RNLI lifeboat crew but could not be saved.

His parents Richard and Janet said yesterday: “We’re absolutely devastated by Ben’s sudden and early death. He was a lovely man with a great sense of humour.

“Ben was very close to his family and very loyal to his friends.

“Although he moved from Cheshire to Scotland primarily to work, he enjoyed living in Lossiemouth. He loved diving and was proud to have gained his BSAC qualification.

“Ben will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him and by us especially, his mum and dad and his younger sisters Abigail and Charlotte.”

Mr Rayner, who lived just yards from the sea on Clifton Road in Lossiemouth, was a passionate diver and a keen member of Burghead Sub Aqua Club.

The club also paid a tribute to him yesterday.

A spokesman said: “Officers and members of Burghead SAC club are deeply saddened by the loss of our friend and fellow diver.

“Ben was an active and enthusiastic diver and member of our club.

“Despite only joining us in 2010, he thoroughly thrived in club activities becoming a member of the committee and undergoing training and diving activities with passion.

“All who knew him will sadly miss him.

“Ben passed away while doing a sport he thoroughly enjoyed. Unfortunately, all attempts to revive Ben by club members and the very prompt rescue services were unsuccessful.

“The club wishes to extend their sincere condolences to Ben’s family and friends at this difficult time.

“We are unable to say anything that can ease the pain and suffering for the loss of such as loveable, family-orientated gentleman.”

Both the family and the club offered their thanks to the RNLI, the coastguard, the RAF Lossiemouth Search and Rescue team and the ambulance service for their prompt attendance and assistance.
