A Moray man who lost his teenage son to cancer has raised nearly £16,000 in his latest fundraising mission.

Walter Sutherland was joined on the 320-mile cycle to Skye by 26 friends from the Moray Wheelers to honour his son Scott, who died of a rare bone cancer in 2002, aged just 18.

Mr Sutherland, of Lossiemouth, will hand over more than £15,700 to Cancer Research UK later this week.

The staggering amount was raised by the group as they took on a four-day challenge to Skye and back, going via Fort William, Mallaig, Armadale and Kyleakin on the way up, and Plockton, Sheildaig, Garve and Inverness on the way home.

The group’s efforts mean that since 2012, Mr Sutherland has raised nearly £54,000 for the charity in memory of his son.

He previously was joined by other members of the Moray Wheelers on a 400-mile cycle from Elgin to the Outer Hebrides and back.

The 62-year-old said: “Cancer is a devastating disease and of course Scott’s death hit my family hard.

“Everyone from Moray Wheelers who took part in the both the Hebridean and West Coast challenges did so for different reasons but Cancer Research UK is a cause that resonates with all of us. Unfortunately, we have all been touched by cancer in some way.

“However, our group is made of tough stuff and the camaraderie and constant banter that exists in the Moray Wheelers is what keeps us all going in the face of adversity – I count myself very lucky to be a member of this very special group of friends.

“Scott would have been proud of the efforts of everyone who has supported the Moray Wheelers efforts to go the extra mile.”

The group’s fundraising page is still open, and anyone who wants to donate should visit www.justgiving.com/moraywheelers15
