A renowned north-east performing arts group has been shortlisted for a national award for its work in the local community.

Modo, which runs the Circus With Purpose project, works with vulnerable young people in the Buchan area.

Modo also lays on a Halloween extravaganza at Aden Park near Mintlaw, in partnership with energy giant Shell.

The two organisations have been recognised for their work on the annual Aden-een event, which brings together hundreds of young people from the area for an evening of frights and fireworks.

Arts and Business Scotland awards celebrate “outstanding and innovative” partnerships between the cultural and business sectors.

Chief executive David Watt said: “We’re delighted to see the north-east feature so prominently on our shortlist which includes some fantastic examples of businesses collaborating creatively with the cultural sector to showcase the very best of cross-sector partnership working in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.”

Mr Watt praised the region’s “thriving cultural sector”.

Modo and Shell are shortlisted along with six other partnerships in the people category, highlighting organisations that have “used the power of culture” to engage with the wider community.

Modo’s artistic director Martin Danziger, who is currently preparing for Aden-een 2015, said last night: “This is another bit of good news for Modo and for others across the north-east.”

Other north-east nominees include Buchanan Food and Woodend Barn, and VisitAberdeen and Aberdeen Festivals.

The winners of the five categories – people, digital innovation, entrepreneurship and international – will be announced at an awards ceremony in February next year.
