A vandal has been locked up after going on a £4,000 wrecking spree in a north-east town.
Liam Cordiner admitted the damaging nearly 30 cars when he appeared at Peterhead Sheriff Court yesterday.
The 20-year-old targeted cars in the King Street, Kirk Street and Cairntrodlie areas on Monday and Tuesday this week.
Last night, James Anderson said he believed his Ford Focus Eco had been targeted because it was new.
The self-employed builder only bought the car two weeks ago, but discovered two of its tyres had been slashed when his wife went to work.
“My wife got up to go to work and the tyre sensor on the car was flashing,” he said. “I tried to pump it up but that’s when we noticed it was slashed. Four other people on the street had their tyres slashes as well.
“The funny thing is, my work van was parked outside as well and wasn’t touched. It’s as if they saw it was new and thought they’d do that.
Each of the tyres cost about £102 to replace.
Another victim, who lives at Cairntrodlie, said people were “frustrated” by the vandalism.
He said: “A lot of people are really frustrated.
“I don’t know if we’ll get insurance money for this.”
When Cordiner, of Leask Avenue, Peterhead, appeared in court yesterday the sheriff said there was no alternative to custody and imposed an eight-month sentence.
Sheriff Michael Fletcher said: “This is an inexplicable set of offences inconveniencing a significant number of people.”
His solicitor, Iain Jane, told the court Cordiner suffered from a background of substance abuse and that there would be no need for a background report before sentencing.
Of the damage caused, he said: “It seems to be an outpouring of anger by Mr Cordiner.”
Sergeant Alex Carle, from the Buchan community policing team, thanked members of the public for reporting the crimes.
He said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the community that came forward to assist us during this inquiry.”
