Two fatal car to tree collisions in a week

The crash at King Edward, Aberdeenshire.

A man has died after crashing his car into a tree on a notorious north-east road.

The 53-year-old, named locally as Marek Walowski, died on Sunday.

Emergency services were called to the A947 Aberdeen to Banff road, between King Edward Church and Mount Bleton, at around 8.30pm.

But Mr Walowski, who is believed to have lived in Macduff, died at the scene.

The tragedy comes just days after five people were killed on the A96 Aberdeen to Elgin road. And police yesterday revealed that another man died following a crash on the A90 Peterhead to Fraserburgh road, near St Fergus, on Thursday.

The 47-year-old, who was driving a black Vauxhall Insignia, collided with a tree at around 6.20am.

He was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, and has since died from his injuries.

Last night, Mr Walowski’s devastated daughter posted a message on social media breaking the news.

Writing in Polish, Agata Brzechwa wrote: “Bitter tears, Dad I will never forget you.

“I would like to let everyone know that the truth is that my dad Marek Wałowski died in a car accident in Scotland.

“The funeral will be together with family.”

Mr Walowski was driving a blue BMW 320D when the accident happened on Sunday.

The road was closed through the night while collision investigators began piecing together what happened, before reopening at about 3.30am.

Sergeant Scott Deans, from the road policing unit, said: “These separate incidents are completely tragic and our thoughts are with both families affected at this very sad time.

“One death on our roads is one too many and the heartbreak that is left behind is far-reaching.

“Inquiries are continuing into both incidents and I would ask anyone with information to please get in touch.

“Likewise, dash-cam footage of either road which captures the vehicles involved could be extremely useful to our investigations.”

Last night, Banff and Buchan MP David Duguid expressed his sympathies to all the families affected by the recent spate of crashes in the north-east.

He said: “It is distressing to hear news of another fatal accident, just days after three of my constituents were killed in a crash on the A96 near Keith.

“My heart goes out to the family and friends of the man involved.

“It is too early to speculate on what may have caused this accident, but I know the police will be working hard to establish exactly what happened.”
