Peterhead air display rescheduled after fog no-show

A highly anticipated air display which was grounded due to thick fog has been rescheduled for next month.

Renowned aerobatic team the Blades were due to show off their skills at Peterhead’s Scottish Week gala last month, but organisers had to call off their appearance at the 11th hour.

The daredevil pilots were due to fly over the Lido area as part of the long-standing summer festival.

But when dense fog caused major visibility problems around the coast, the show was pulled. It was hoped the event could be moved inland, but all display paths must have prior approval from the Civil Aviation Authority.

Now, the Scottish Week committee has announced that the Blades will make a return to Peterhead on Friday, September 5.

The crew, who are performing in Ayrshire on the same day, have agreed to travel north for the display, which kicks off at 7pm.

Peterhead Port Authority has stepped in to pay the additional £500 cost for the rescheduled show.

Scottish Week treasurer Graham Barron said: “People are delighted that they are coming back.”

The Blades, featuring four former members of the famous Red Arrows, wowed crowds at Peterhead during last year’s summer celebrations.

Organisers said that, despite the Blades’ no-show, this summer’s festival had been a “phenomenal” success.

Among the highlights were a busy, sun-blessed sandcastle contest; a series of talent shows and the festival’s traditional bay swim and raft race.
