Workers at a Peterhead engineering firm have donated £3,100 to the town’s lifeboat crew.

Maritime Developments raised the money during a staff dinner and hog roast party at the company’s premises on Wilson Street.

Last night, lifeboat spokesman, David Anderson, said it was donations such as these enabled the volunteer crew to save lives.

He said: “It’s nice when the local community gets behind us. A lot of people don’t realise that we’re truly a charity – all the funds we get are donated by the public.”

Mr Anderson said the money would be spent on training and equipping the crew of the Misses Robertson of Kintail lifeboat.

“It costs around £1,500 to equip a lifeboatman for a year and eight out of 10 lifeboatmen have no maritime training,” he said.

“The training they require is massive these days compared to what it used to be, so it’s very important that they are trained to operate safely and to save lives at sea.”

Derek Smith, Maritime Development’s chief executive, said employees were glad to get behind the charity.

“We are delighted to have raised such a tremendous amount for the RNLI which makes a genuine difference to people’s lives across the north-east,” he said.

It is hoped the crew can add to their funds on Friday, January 30, when they host a quiz at the Harbour Lights bar, Longate, at 7pm.

Entry is £12 per team of four and can be booked by calling the station on 01779 473331.
