A puppy has been seriously injured after being allegedly thrown over a 6ft wall in Peterhead.

Four-month-old Yorkshire Terrier Kai suffered spinal injuries in the alleged incident, which happened at about noon in the Queen Street area of the town yesterday.

Distraught owner Michelle Mackie was facing an anxious wait last night to find out if the pup – who discovered lying injured a neighbour’s garden – will survive.

She said: “We could never imagine anything like this happening.

“Because Kai’s shown to have spinal injuries – his back legs aren’t moving and they’re really stretched out – the vet’s sedated him.

“He’s taken a blow to the head so he was bleeding from that, he bit through his tongue so he was also bleeding from the mouth. I was absolutely covered in blood.

“The vet’s said he will monitor him overnight and keep administering painkillers and trying to reduce swelling.”

Mrs Mackie’s next door neighbour raced to find her after discovering Kai lying in their garden, and feared the worst when she first saw him.

Mrs Mackie, who also keeps cats and rabbits at the family home, said: “He was just lying there with his body all twisted and covered in blood. I thought he was dead but when I picked him up he was still moving and jerking a bit.

“We tried to go to the vet but it was shut so we flagged down a police officer who contacted the vet and waited with us at the station.”

Police last night confirmed a 20-year-old man from Peterhead had been charged in connection with the incident.

Constable Richard Cooper said: “Following a search of the local area, a man was detained by officers at approximately 12.25pm.

“The Yorkshire Terrier puppy has suffered a serious injury and is currently being assessed by a local veterinary practice.

“This appears to have been an isolated incident but has obviously left the owners of the dog very upset.

“A man has been charged in relation to this case and he is expected to appear at Peterhead Sheriff Court today.”
