Voters are being given the chance to grill general election candidates in a series of hustings events organised by church groups.

People competing to be the next MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey are having a showdown at Culduthel Christian Centre in Inverness on April 30.

Danny Alexander (Lib Dem), Drew Hendry (SNP), Edward Mountain (Conservative), Mike Robb (Labour) and Donald Boyd (Scottish Christian Party) have confirmed they will be taking part.

The event has been organised in association with Evangelical Alliance Scotland.

Alasdair MacLeod, the pastor of Culduthel Christian Centre, said: “We all have a responsibility and common concern to cast our vote wisely in this election.

“We are delighted to serve the wider church and community by welcoming all the candidates to share their vision and respond to questions about the future of our society.”

A hustings, also part organised by Evangelical Alliance Scotland, is being held in Stornoway Town Hall on Lewis on April 28.

All five candidates hoping to be the next MP for the Western Isles are taking part.

Kieran Turner of Evangelical Alliance Scotland said: “With so many evangelical Christians in the Western Isles, almost all of whom will vote, it’s no surprise to me that the candidates want to engage with our churches.

“In the past it has perhaps been thought that Christians were only interested in complaining about politics or interested in protecting their own interests.

“But one of the most interesting results of our recent Faith in Politics? report was that the top issues of concern for Christians are those that reflect the common good and the whole of society.

“Now churches are increasingly being recognised for the vast amounts of community work they are engaged with across Scotland and we hope this event will be used by the whole community to discuss how to build a better island and a better nation.”

All six candidates standing in the constituency of Angus are taking part in a hustings in the George Hotel in Montrose on Wednesday (April 22).

The event is being organised by a group called Montrose Churches Together.
