Membership of the SNP has grown to over 115,000 – putting the party in a strong position ahead of the Scottish Parliament elections in its efforts to secure a historic third term in government.

New figures show that party membership now stands at 115,102 – up from 25,642 on September 18 2014.

The SNP is the largest party in Scotland by considerable distance and the third-largest party in the UK.

SNP Business Convener Derek Mackay MSP said: “The incredible upsurge in SNP membership shows no signs of stopping – with membership now over 115,000, putting the party in a very strong position as we seek to secure the re-election of Nicola Sturgeon as First Minister and a historic third-term in office.

“This extraordinary increase in membership makes clear that it is the SNP which people trust to stand up for Scotland’s best interests – in contrast to a Labour party in complete disarray north and south of the border, and a Tory party plotting to cut Scotland’s budget by the backdoor.

“The SNP has a strong track record in government and a bold, ambitious and progressive vision for Scotland’s future – and the party’s vast membership will be making the positive case for casting both votes for the SNP in May’s election in communities across the country, as we seek to build on the progress made since 2007 and keep Scotland moving forward.”
