Dons chairman Dave Cormack backs calls for SPFL vote inquiry

Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack has backed calls for an independent inquiry into the SPFL’s vote to end the season in the bottom three tiers.

Rangers and Hearts have already called for a review into the vote, with the Ibrox club claiming SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster should be suspended until it has been carried out.

The resolution was passed last Wednesday after Dundee belatedly changed their decisive vote to back an early end to the lower three divisions.

The Dons voted in favour of the resolution but had been holding out for an amendment giving the 12 Premiership clubs the final say on calling the season rather than leaving that power with the SPFL board.

Cormack, speaking on BBC Sportsound, admitted he is in favour of an inquiry into the vote.

He said: “A non-Aberdeen fan got in touch with me and we have to think about what it looks like from a fan’s perspective.

“This isn’t the best position to be in and we can do better. Here’s a quote a fan sent me from the 18th Century: ‘For evil to succeed it’s only necessary for good men to do nothing.’

“If that’s the feeling of fans out there across the board then we owe it to ourselves and owe it to the fans to right this situation

“Coming back to the investigation and what (Hearts owner) Ann Budge has said, we’d like to see an independent investigation and somebody independently chair it because if we don’t have one I’m not sure people will believe it.”

Cormack revealed that SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster phoned him 20 minutes before the vote’s deadline and before the Dons had cast their vote to inform him the club’s vote was not needed to pass the motion as nine Premiership clubs had already voted in favour.

The Dons chairman said: “In defence of Neil, he was taking our request as a club to have the 12 Premiership clubs consulted.

“He was basically calling me to say that they were still going to do that, but just to be aware that they had the nine votes. Our vote doesn’t count from there but we decided to back it based on the assurance we had.”

Cormack, meanwhile, has not given up hope that the 2019-20 Scottish Premiership season could be completed. The Dons are sitting fourth in the table, a point behind Motherwell, with eight games to go.

He added: “At Aberdeen we’d be as well taking £1 million out to the car park at Pittodrie and setting fire to it because every month this goes by it’s costing us £1m. What are the work streams medically? Let’s look at (games) behind closed doors. You look at the English Premier League and the English Football League.

“Right now there is documentation about them finishing their leagues and there’s tens of millions on the line.

“I’m assured that this work starts on Monday, but I think it’s really important for the executive of the SPFL, led by Neil Doncaster, to take leadership and he’ll get as much support as he needs from Aberdeen.”
