Aberdeen geared up for their Europa League qualifying campaign with a 3-0 victory against St Johnstone in a friendly at McDiarmid Park.

Adam Rooney put the Dons in front after 32 minutes before Ryan Christie netted a second a minute before the interval.

Youngster Bruce Anderson scored a third for the visitors in the closing stages on a comfortable afternoon for Derek McInnes’ side.

New signings Greg Stewart and Greg Tansey both started for the Reds, while former Caley Thistle defender Kevin McNaughton, who has been training with the Dons to regain fitness, and German trialist Berkay Dabanli were on the bench.

Saints, beaten 2-1 in the Europa League on Thursday by Lithuanian side FK Trakai, had a trialist of their own on the bench with Callum Hendry, son of former Scotland international Colin.

The Dons threatened first with Alan Mannus called into action in the eighth minute to keep out an Andrew Considine header before last season’s top scorer Adam Rooney volleyed over.

It took the Saints 18 minutes to register their first effort on target with Joe Lewis equal to Chris Kane’s long-range attempt.

The hosts should have taken the lead on the half-hour mark when Tansey was dispossessed, allowing Kane to run clean through on goal but he could find no way past Lewis.

But it was Aberdeen who made the breakthrough two minutes later when Rooney pounced on a slack back-pass from Jason Kerr and rounded Mannus and then defender Liam Gordon before walking the ball into an unguarded net.

The Dons doubled the advantage a minute before the break when Shay Logan’s floated cross fell perfectly for the unmarked Christie to head home from six yards out.

Aberdeen brought on nine substitutes in the 64th minute with McNaughton and Dabanli both taking to the field.

Youngster Bruce Anderson had a chance to grab a third soon after but his effort finished high and wide.

Frank Ross went even closer soon after with a powerful drive that was superbly saved by Mannus.

Anderson completed the scoring in the 86th minute when he smashed the ball home off the underside of the crossbar from 10 yards out.
