Former Aberdeen forward Darren Mackie believes a new striker is the top priority for Derek McInnes but says the Dons manager is right to hold his nerve and wait for the right man.
McInnes is keen to bolster his squad ahead of this weekend’s trip to Dens Park to take on Neil McCann’s Dundee and is keen to bring a new forward to Pittodrie following the departure of Adam Rooney to Salford City.
The Dons boss has admitted he may wait until after the English transfer window has closed on Thursday before doing business and Mackie reckons it could be a gamble worth taking.
He said: “There may well be good deals once the English transfer window closes.
“The Scottish clubs have time once the English window shuts to see what is left on offer.
“Aberdeen have done well with loan signings in the past.
“I think a striker would be top of the list.
“They have got options, depending on what system they play.
“Niall McGinn and Gary Mackay-Steven can play up front but I think Derek will be looking to bring in an experienced forward to help the younger players.
“I am sure they are working really hard and hopefully they can get something concluded before the Dundee game.
“But if not, they have got enough ability in the squad to win games like that.
“Derek will be working hard to bring in the right players.
“There is no point making a panic decision. They will want to get it right.”
The Dons drew 1-1 with 10-man Rangers in their Scottish Premeirship opener on Sunday with new Gers boss Steven Gerrard describing his side as “a class above” the Dons.
But Mackie reckons his former side can finish in the top two for the fifth year in a row.
He added: “Aberdeen have enough ability to finish second again.
“Rangers look more organised. We didn’t get to see too much of them as an attacking force on Sunday after they went down to 10 men but they look sound defensively.
“Hibernian have started well as have Hearts.
“It is going to be tough near the top of the table but Aberdeen have enough about them to take the challenge to the teams that are trying to catch them.
“It was difficult to read too much into Sunday’s game against Rangers after Alfredo Morelos was sent off so early.”
