Brian Cameron impressed by strength in depth of Elgin City squad

Elgin City midfielder Brian Cameron feels the strength in depth assembled by manager Gavin Price bodes well for the League 2 campaign.

Price made five changes to his side for Wednesday’s IRN-BRU Cup tie against Arbroath, in which the Black and Whites were defeated 7-6 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes, with the likes of Shane Sutherland, Craig Beattie and Jordan Lowdon starting on the bench.

City have made a strong start to the league season, taking four points from their opening two games against Annan Athletic and Edinburgh City, and Cameron feels there is plenty cause for optimism ahead of today’s trip to Albion Rovers.

The 26-year-old, who recently returned from an ankle injury, said: “There’s a lot of competition for places, which can only be good for the squad.

“It’s something we haven’t really had the last few years, but now there are boys on the bench who can come in and start.

“We are looking strong at the back, and we are looking dangerous every time we go forward, with the likes of Shane Sutherland and myself.

“We know we can pass anyone off the park, we have just got to take our chances.”

Rovers were relegated from League 1 last season and have had a difficult start to the new campaign, occupying bottom spot in the table with seven straight losses in all competitions.

Cameron remains wary of the Coatbridge outfit however, and he said: “The manager has told us not to look into the results too much. It’s a tough place to go, I have played there many a time myself.

“We will have them watched and get a good report on them so we know what they’re about. We’ve just got to concentrate on our own game.

“If we keep playing the way we have been away from home, I’m sure we will pick up points. Hopefully we can go there and get a positive result.”

Despite Elgin being eliminated from the IRN-BRU Cup in midweek, Cameron took encouragement from his side’s showing against Dick Campbell’s men, who occupy top place in League 1.

The Elgin-born player added: “There were a few tired legs, but I thought in the second half we were the team most likely to go on and win it once we got the equaliser.

“Arbroath are flying. Even when they played in this league it was always a good battle against us. I thought we played really well and dictated a lot of the play.

“We had a good few chances to score, and limited them to very little.

“It was a positive result and a good workout for us, the boys are looking fit and sharp. Hopefully we can continue the good start to the season.”
