Jim Weir: This week will define Elgin City’s season

Elgin City manager Jim Weir believes this week will be the defining one in his club’s season.

A win against Clyde at Borough Briggs tonight will take Weir’s men above the Bully Wee in the table. But a defeat will leave them looking over their shoulder in a bid to avoid relegation issues at the foot of the table.

Weir said: “We have two home games in a row with Clyde on Tuesday and Queen’s Park on Saturday.

“If we can win both of those games then we are very much looking up the way but if we were not to take anything then we still have to do a good bit of work to ensure we do not get sucked into anything below us.

“It is a defining week in our season and hopefully we can come out on the right side of it. Against East Fife last Tuesday we made mistakes at the back and failed to take our chances and that ended in a 5-3 defeat. Hopefully, we have learned from it.”

Weir is pleased to be going into the game after a free weekend as his side picked up knocks against the Fifers.

He said: “Jamie Duff, Ally Gilchrist and Matt Cooper would have struggled to play if the game was on Saturday but they should be OK for this game.”

On-loan Raith Rovers goalkeeper Ross Laidlaw is expected to return to replace teenage understudy Stuart Black after a shoulder injury.

Clyde are unbeaten in seven matches and manager Barry Ferguson is looking for his side to move to within touching distance of a play-off place.

A win would lift the Bully Wee above Annan and into fifth place a point outside of the play-off zone.

Ferguson said: “The play-offs are not beyond us and winning this game would take us right on to the shoulders of East Fife. If we are to win then we will have to start the game better than we did against East Stirling at the weekend.

“We came back to draw 1-1 and keep our unbeaten run going but the boys were disappointed with how they played. They know they can play better.”

Ferguson added: “We did finish strongly and need to build on that especially against an Elgin side looking to bounce back after losing to East Fife.”

Scott McLaughlin remains out with a broken arm, Scott Ferguson is absent with a knee knock and, while Scott McManus has returned to training after a knee injury, Ferguson is unlikely to include him due to a lack of match practice.
