Ferguson’s late strike gives Dons victory against Falkirk

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes believes the Dons can cope if Motherwell employ a physical approach.
Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes believes the Dons can cope if Motherwell employ a physical approach.

Aberdeen’s preparations for the new season continued with a 1-0 win against Championship side Falkirk at Gayfield in Arbroath.

Substitute Lewis Ferguson came off the bench to score the only goal of the game two minutes from time and Dons manager Derek McInnes will be pleased to see Mikey Devlin keep another clean sheet in his 77 minute appearance while two of his strikers also got their first minutes under their belts.

Dons boss Derek McInnes handed a first start to new signing Stephen Gleeson while Chris Forrester and Lewis Ferguson were named on the bench for the trip to Gayfield in Arbroath.

Stevie May and Sam Cosgrove both made the starting 11 after missing Saturday’s 1-0 win against Cobh Ramblers in Cork.

The Bairns offered a step up in class from the youngsters of Cobh and there was little in the way of goalmouth action in an even first half between the Dons and their Championship opponents.

Gary Mackay-Steven fired straight at Leo Fasan for the Dons while Daniel Turner forced Joe Lewis into a fine save for the Bairns.

Forrester and Ferguson both featured in the second half as the Dons searched for an opener but it was Falkirk who came closest to a goal through Tommy Robson but his shot was saved by Lewis.

It looked a goalless draw was going to be the outcome but Ferguson had other ideas, sliding in to sidefoot Andy Considine’s cross two minutes from time to give his side victory.
