Aberdeen FC: Derek McInnes says goal difference will be key

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes insists increasing the goal count at the club will be key to a successful season for the Pittodrie club.

The Dons scored 53 goals in the Scottish Premiership last term and have hit five in their opening three matches so far in the new campaign.

The Dons manager, whose Reds go in search of their fourth win in a row when Dundee visit Pittodrie on Saturday, has called on his squad to share the burden of getting the goals and take the pressure of attacking duo Adam Rooney and David Goodwillie.

Rooney was the leading scorer in the division last season, netting 18 times, but McInnes believes every player at the club can contribute more.

Defender Ashton Taylor got his first goal of the new campaign on Saturday when he scored the winner in a 2-1 victory at Motherwell and McInnes believes the centre half is capable of getting many more this season.

He said: “There is a good determination within the squad to win games and we are starting to get goals from set-pieces now which is nice.

“Ash got four goals last season but if we can get the delivery right he can improve on that and we are looking for more goals from him and others this season.

“When Jonny Hayes and Niall McGinn get on the ball they are capable of making things happen and there was a lot to like about our attacking play in the first half on Saturday.

“Box to box, there was a lot to like about us with the quality shown in the first half matched by the desire in the second half.

“We didn’t have the same element of control in the second half but it is never easy going to Motherwell and anytime you come away with a win you have to be pleased.

“But there is always room for improvement and we have to show what we did in the first half on Saturday for 90 minutes.”

The Dons host a Dundee side which has taken seven points from a possible 12 in their opening four matches and McInnes knows his team will need to produce a strong display to overcome Paul Hartley’s Dark Blues.

He said: “Every game is a challenge and Dundee can be a challenge for anyone in this league but we want to bring a level of performance which can win the game.”
