Caley Thistle manager John Hughes reckons goals are always a possibility as long as attacker Billy Mckay is on the pitch.

Mckay’s double against Kilmarnock last weekend took his tally for the season to nine as 10-man Inverness came from behind to beat the Ayrshire side 2-1.

The Northern Irishman indicated after the game he will leave Caledonian Stadium when his contract ends in the summer but Hughes believes the 26-year-old still has a massive part to play in the second half of the campaign.

Ahead of today’s game against Dundee United at Tannadice, Hughes said: “Billy seems to have got that belief back that the goals are coming. That’s nine now going into the second half of the season. If he gets me another nine that’s a good return.

“It was never in doubt as long as he stays injury-free and we keep playing him. We keep playing him because even when it’s not going his way he can still conjure up a bit of magic.”

Hughes has called for his side to show no fear against the Arabs, who are level with Caley Jags in third place on 41 points.

Hughes added: “I’m looking forward to the game.

“From afar, I look at what Jackie McNamara has done and he’s unearthed one or two really good young players. He’s giving them a chance – that’s the most important thing.

“They’ve got a number of good players. We have to respect everything on the pitch for them, whether it’s their left back, their right back or their goalkeeper. It’s Dundee United as a team we’re playing. We have to make sure we come up with a system that makes Dundee United know they’ve been in a game.

“I’m loving it. All the credit goes to the players for where we are just now.

“Going into the Dundee United game, there’s not too much pressure on us. We can go there and enjoy it, experiment and express ourselves.”
