US Open qualifying: Injury forces Ramsay out

Aberdeen golfer Richie Ramsay has been forced to pull out of the US Open qualifying today to avoid aggravating the injury which kept him out of action for several months at the start of the year.

The 30-year-old had been due to join more than 100 hopefuls looking for a ticket to play at Pinehurst next month in golf’s second major of the year.

But after two busy weeks playing with ligament pain in his right ankle he has chosen not to play 36-holes in a day at the Walton Heath Club in South London.

Ramsay suffered the ankle injury sustained while running in Atlanta in December and did not appear again until the Hassan II Trophy in Morocco in March where he was 11th.

“I think I could have got through it,” said Ramsay. “But after playing well in Spain last week and four rounds here at Wentworth I did not want to take the risk of doing more damage.

“To finish here at Wentworth, go straight to Walton Heath and play two rounds in a day and then travel to the next tournament in Sweden could have been too much.

“And I don’t want to have any more time off after having to miss three months out with the ankle problem at the end of last year which stopped me playing until Morocco.”

Ramsay finish the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth with a level par 72 compiled in a tricky breeze with three birdies but a matching number of bogeys which left on level for the week and inside the top 40.

But he had no complaints about his golf saying: “It was a decent week in tricky conditions. And I missed a couple of short putts at the fifth and 14th and I felt a two under par 70 would have better reflected the way I played.”
