Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes believes the success of goalkeeper Danny Ward at Pittodrie has been crucial in him landing a second Liverpool player on loan.

Northern Ireland defender Ryan McLaughlin has joined the Dons on loan until January from the Anfield club and McInnes said: “Ryan brings us another option. He can play right back and on the right of midfield.

“Shay Logan has played every minute of every game as has Ash Taylor and Graeme Shinnie so it will be nice to have another option there.

“I don’t know if this is the start of a link with Liverpool, but I’d be happy if it was. One of the players already joked about when the conveyor belt would go the other way. Danny’s situation has helped due to the fact he has done well and we’re in constant contact with Liverpool. Hopefully Ryan can be just as successful here.”

McLaughlin watched his new team beat Partick 2-0 on Saturday to set up a top of the table encounter against Celtic after the international break and McInnes insists his side is ready for the challenge.

He said: “Celtic are a good side and they want to come up to Pittodrie, give us a slap and put us in our place. It’s got all the makings of a great game.”
