David Arquette is set to reprise his role as Sheriff Dewey Riley in the upcoming Scream reboot, it has been announced.

Studio Spyglass Media Group said filming on the fifth instalment in the slasher franchise will begin in North Carolina later this year, when safety measures for the coronavirus pandemic are in place.

Arquette, 48, said: “I am thrilled to be playing Dewey again and to reunite with my Scream family, old and new.

“Scream has been such a big part of my life, and for both the fans and myself, I look forward to honouring Wes Craven’s legacy.”

Arquette first played small-town police officer Dewey in the original Craven-directed Scream in 1996. He reprised the role in the three sequels, most recently 2011’s Scream 4.

Plot details for the fifth movie are being kept under wraps, but it has been confirmed that Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will be on directing duties.

Scream arrived in cinemas in 1996 and starred Neve Campbell as Sidney, a high school student in the fictional town of Woodsboro, California, who becomes the target of a mysterious killer in a Halloween costume known as Ghostface.

Earlier this month Campbell confirmed she was in talks over a possible return.
