kingussie Master marksman has sights set firmly on team glory and winning the Premier Division title

Ross honoured after he reaches a goalscoring landmark

Master marksman Ronald Ross was presented with a specially commissioned trophy, hand-crafted in Ireland, on Saturday night to commemorate his 1,000 goals for Kingussie.

But the man who has an amazing 50 winner’s medals admits: “My sights are firmly on catching Newtonmore to win the Premier Division title. To do that we need to win our final five games — which is a big task, but we're well capable of achieving it.”

The award in bronze, of a shinty player swinging his caman, took Ross completely by surprise, but he said: “We win or lose as a team and it’s goals for the team that matters."

Ross scored in Saturday's 4-1 home win over Bute and now has 75 goals in 23 games this season and could yet go close to his record of 95.

Club president Ally Brown said: “We felt there should be a one-off statuette made for a one-off player, the greatest goalscorer the game has seen."

Kevin Thain, Fraser Munro and a superb drive from Thomas Borthwick, who collected the club's young player of the year trophy, completed the Kingussie tally with Robert Walker responding for Bute.

But Newtonmore drummed out an emphatic warning that they're in no mood to let slip the chance of their first Premier championship, which they can achieve by winning their next two games then taking a point from their final game at Kingussie on November 7.

The Eilean side surprisingly thrashed MacAulay Cup winners Inveraray 8-0 with hat-tricks for David Cheyne and Danny MacRae. Evan Menzies and Steven Macdonald completed the scoring.

That gives More a superior goal difference to Kingussie should the title be settled that way.

Defeats for Bute and Inveraray are a relief to Lochaber, who are just above them in the struggle to avoid the second relegation place.

Camanachd Cup runners-up Kyles Athletic showed there was no adverse reaction by thumping Lochaber 5-1 at Spean Bridge.

Duncan Kerr followed his double in the final with another two late goals after Grant Irvine, Matthew MacColl and Tom Whyte had put Kyles 3-1 up with Martin Johnston netting for Lochaber.

It has all turned round for Camanachd Cup winners Fort William, who, despite their recent miserable league run, have hoisted themselves past Glenurquhart to third place after a 5-2 win over Oban Camanachd.

But there was consolation for Oban with their reserve side Lochside Rovers winning the Bullough Cup beating Kyles Athletic 6-4 after extra time at Tighnabruiach.

The first champions of the season are Beauly, who clinched the North Third Division title with a 3-1 win over Lochaber.

Meanwhile, Kilmallie leapfrog Skye to the top of the North First Division after thrashing Lochcarron 8-2 at Canal Park.
