A group of builders has swapped the north-east for Kenya to help build a dormitory in an impoverished village.

Tradesmen from the Stewart Milne Group are aiming to build a 16-bed dormitory and a three-bedroom house in Katarina for the Gathimba Edwards Foundation in just two weeks.

However, thanks to the additional help from volunteers, the 19-strong team is already ahead of schedule.

The foundation was set up by Kenyan international athlete Gideon Gathimba and Scottish 1,500m champion Myles Edwards to transform the Pavilion Village children’s home, where 23 youngsters who have been orphaned, abandoned or abused live.

The children’s home has struggled to provide food and basic facilities, including electricity, as well as paying the children’s school fees.

The workers, including a group from Aberdeen, will build the dormitory with toilets, showers and a study room, so the children no longer have to do their homework by candlelight on the floor.

Athlete Mr Edwards said he had been “truly blown away by the firm’s generosity”.

He added: “I cannot believe how quickly they are working.

“They have flown through the work and their determined attitude is going to transform what we are able to achieve during this trip.”

The company has also donated personal protection equipment and tools worth thousands of pounds.

Stewart Milne Group chief executive Glenn Allison said: “It’s our 40th anniversary this year and we have been undertaking a number of initiatives for our employees and the communities in which we operate.

“Stepping in to make Myles’ dream of the Pavilion Village a reality is also a great way for us to mark our fourth decade in business.”

The company’s site manager Ronnie Falconer, added: “It’s wonderful that Stewart Milne Group has sent us on the mission which gives us the opportunity to totally change children’s lives.

“None of us had been to Africa before and we are enjoying the atmosphere and getting to know the local people.

“Lots of my friends and relatives gave me clothes and essentials to hand out which have been well received.”
