Get ready for winter

Age Scotland Enterprises offers top tips to prepare your home for winter weather

1 Roof tiles: Get a recommended tradesperson to take a look at the roof – now is the right time to check all the tiles are secured and everything is sealed correctly.

2 Guttering: Now is a good time to check that the guttering is clear. Ensure any leaves or obstructions that have the potential to cause a blockage when the weather gets worse are removed, and pay special attention to the ends of the guttering or any junctions. If you are unable to safely look at the guttering around the home, ask a friend or neighbour or get in contact with a recommended tradesperson.

3 Boiler: It is always tempting to wait until that first cold day of the year to turn a boiler on, but it’s better to check it is in good working order before this. Get the boiler inspected or serviced regularly by a registered professional and ask them to check that all the radiators are in good working order.

4 Insulation: To keep the home warm through the winter, it is vital to have the appropriate insulation for the loft and cavity walls. Efficient double glazing can also help keep homes warm. In addition, it’s worth speaking to your energy provider to see whether you qualify for free energy saving home improvements.

5 Garden furniture: As the evenings get chillier and darker, it is time to store away garden furniture, to avoid damage and wear and tear during the winter months. BBQs and garden furniture can often be expensive so it’s worth ensuring they are safely padlocked away in a shed or outhouse, if you are lacking indoor storage space.
