From Serie A to Inverness

From Serie A to Inverness

Few players make the circuitous route from Inter Milan to Inverness.

Left-winger Ben Greenhalgh’s career has been far from ordinary, though.

He won a contract with the Italian giants as part of the prize on a reality television show but in 18 months with the Serie A club never played a game.

Orpington-born Greenhalgh returned to England to play non-league football with Maidstone United and Ebbsfleet United before accepting a one-year deal from Inverness this summer.

Yet, eight games into the season he is still waiting for a real chance to impress for the league leaders.

It could come at St Johnstone today, with James Vincent (knee) injured and the 21-year-old, who played 65 minutes as a substitute against Hibs last week, is ready to take his chance.

He said: “For as long as I play people will always mention Inter as my background.

“I did not expect to come here and jump straight into the team.

“It was a case of keeping fit and showing what I could do when I got the chance. I don’t think it puts pressure on me.

“Sometimes on social media people might think: ‘What I am doing at Inverness after being at Inter Milan?’

“They don’t really understand the world of football. Inter won everything when I was there.

“Inverness are a good team, we are top of the Scottish Premiership. I have no regrets about leaving Italy and coming here.”

Greenhalgh admits he had no right to walk into the Caley Jags first team after they have stormed to the top of the Premiership table.

He said: “I want to play and you could say I would be a little disappointed if I didn’t play (today).

“The manager (Terry Butcher) is going to do what he thinks is right and choose the team he thinks will get three points.

“I won’t take it too badly if I am not playing and I will be on the bench ready to come on. When you get an opportunity you have to take it.

“It can be frustrating when the team is winning and you know you are only going to get a few minutes on the pitch.

“You don’t get to show what you can do.

“I got 65 minutes against Hibs. As a left winger I think it is my job to get assists more than goals.

“It was good to get out there and be a part of it.”
