North firm gets into full swing for golf contest

An official tweed collection celebrating golf’s Ryder Cup tournament being played in Scotland has been unveiled.

Harris Tweed Hebrides has created a 25-piece range of clothing and accessories from hacking jackets and plus fours for men and women to cufflinks and a hip flask.

The company launched the limited edition collection yesterday at the Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire, where the world’s top golfers will compete for the trophy in September.

The tweed will also be cut into the uniform for the junior Ryder Cup team, who will play in the run-up to the main competition.

Mark Hogarth, Harris Tweed Hebrides’ creative director, said: “Our team was set the challenge of creating a tweed that complements the Ryder Cup livery and official tartan, but that also represents the unique blues of the Hebrides.

“Ken Kennedy, our head of pattern design, has created a stunning herringbone design with a colour spectrum of cobalt to aquamarine.”

The firm, based at Shawbost in the Isle of Lewis, has partnered with Edinburgh-based retailer Walker Slater to produce the collection.

Sports Secretary Shona Robison said: “The Ryder Cup Harris Tweed collection is an exciting example of an iconic Scottish brand working with a global event to showcase the best of Scotland on the world stage.”
