Former Western Isles school goes on sale for £80,000

What was once Scotland’s smallest school has gone on the market for offers over £80,000.

Cliasmol School on Harris closed in 2008 with just four pupils – who cost £25,000-a-year each to teach. The decision was taken as the roll was due to fall to just two.

Pupils are now taught at a school 10 miles away in Tarbert.

And now the tiny school is being sold by the Western Isles Council.

Selling agents Ken Macdonald and Co say: “The opportunity has arisen to obtain this former primary school in a remote location in the north west of Harris.

“The commercial premises extend to approximately 108 square metres (1,162sq ft) and provide the potential for conversion to a studio, hostel or residential premise.

“The property is located in a remote location overlooking a contrast of rugged hillsides down the valley to the waters of Loch a Siar. Situated approximately 10 miles from Tarbert town centre and seven miles from the stunning white shorelines of Husinish.”

The picturesque school once educated the children of cider heir and multimillionaire Jonathan Bulmer, who then lived at the nearby exclusive Amhuinnsuidhe Castle. He sold the castle for £2million in 2003.
