A man has been arrested following a crash on one of the north-east’s busiest roads which resulted in a teenager being taken to hospital.

The A90 Fraserburgh to Rathen road was closed near to the junction to Gowanhill following a five-car collision shortly after 5.30pm on Tuesday.

A teenage girl, who was travelling in one of the vehicles, had to be taken to Fraserburgh Hospital in the aftermath to be treated for whiplash.

Last night, a spokeswoman for the police said a man had been arrested in connection with the crash.

She said: “A 40-year-old man has been arrested.

“He hasn’t been charged with anything yet.”

The road, which has been the scene of several fatal incidents, re-opened at about 6.30pm.

At the time, a spokesman for the Scottish Ambulance Service said he believed the incident was “quite minor”

He said: “We received a call at 5.51pm to attend a road traffic collision on the A90 south of Fraserburgh.

“We dispatched two ambulances to the incident.

“One female patient in her teens was taken to Fraserburgh hospital.”

Last week a woman had to be airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI) when she crashed on the route near the Ban-Car Hotel, Lonmay.

Locals said the road was “hot spot” for accidents.

Campaigners have repeatedly called for route improvements including dualling the road from Aberdeen to Fraserburgh.

After another crash on the A90 last week, Why Stop at Ellon? campaigner councillor Gillian Owen said: “The road should be brought up to proper standards.”

Last night, Fraserburgh councillor Brian Topping added: “It’s another accident that shouldn’t have happened.

“I’m glad to hear that no one appears to have been seriously injured.”
