DC Thomson inaugural cruise cancelled due to pandemic

A popular cruise trip to Norway which was being run through the Press and Journal has been cancelled.

Demand for the voyage had been so high that a second in 2021 had been scheduled.

But with the continued spread of coronavirus, the decision to suspend the inaugural DC Thomson Travel cruise and all of those being operated by partner Cruise and Maritime Voyages this summer has been made.

Governments across the world are continuing to advise the lockdown of many countries and ports in an effort to keep cases to a minimum.

Scheduled to set sail on June 14, with 1,250 passengers aboard, the CMV cruise ship Magellan would have charted a course from Dundee on an 11-night voyage to Norway’s Land of the Midnight Sun and Fjordland.

Cruise and Maritime Voyages chief executive, Christian Verhounig, said: “Due to the continued global pandemic, we are still unable to perform our scheduled itineraries and to deliver the travel experience normally enjoyed by our valued passengers.

“We are extremely proud to see that nearly 80% of our passengers affected by the cancellation of their cruise have re-booked onto future cruises.

“This is a great sign and we know that passengers are looking forward to travelling with us in the near future.”

The journey was poised to evoke memories of the days when the Press and Journal’s parent company, DC Thomson, ran a famous shipping line in the 1800s

Now, each reader who is booked on The Best of Norway and Scottish Isles Cruise will receive an e-letter which will include all the options available to them.

Instructions on how to book onto next year’s cruise or an alternative – with an attractive future cruise credit of 125% of the amount paid will also be included.

Craig Houston, head of enterprise for DC Thomson Media, said: “We’re desperately disappointed for all of the readers who had booked and we were looking forward to welcoming on board.

“However, we acknowledge that the correct decision has been made at this time.”
