Plans to turn temporary Aberdeen science centre base back into shop

A city centre building will be converted back into a shop after serving at the temporary base for Aberdeen Science Centre.

The attraction moved a selection of its exhibits to 107 George Street in late 2018, while its venue on Constitution Street was undergoing a £4.7 million revamp.

Bosses are now making the final preparations ahead of reopening the doors of its traditional home, which means the city centre property, which belongs to the adjacent Bon Accord Centre, will soon be vacated.

Management of the shopping centre are hopeful that it won’t lie empty for too long and have lodged a planning application with Aberdeen City Council to change it back into a shop.

Manager of the mall, Craig Stevenson, said: “Now that the Science Centre is looking towards moving into their new space, a planning application has been lodged to turn this unit back into a retail unit for the future.”

Last month, a special pop-up exhibition about the redevelopment went on show at the Bon Accord Centre

The exhibition shows off some of the centre’s most interesting exhibits, and takes visitors back to 1988 when it first opened its doors as Satrosphere – Scotland’s first science centre.

The refurbishment of its building near the beach has included an extension and the creation of a new mezzanine floor – almost doubling the exhibition space and exposing the roof structure to allow natural light to flood into the building.
