Council chiefs have voiced their support for highly ambitious plans to redevelop a north-east sports ground – but warned that it will need “significant” funding from a third party.
Peterhead FC is spearheading a drive to build a multimillion-pound leisure complex at its Balmoor Stadium home.
The long-awaited proposals were unveiled to the public on Tuesday night, after more than a year of planning and consultations with local groups.
The Scottish League Two side said it is now looking for public support, to help persuade Aberdeenshire Council to get onboard and help with funding.
Last night, council leader Jim Gifford praised the development, as his local authority issued a statement claiming that only way to deliver the proposals would be for “significant external funding” to be secured.
“The council is pleased to be a partner in this exciting and innovative community-led proposal,” Mr Gifford said.
Head of education, learning and leisure, Isobel Davidson, added: “The details now need to be considered and the council has several roles to play as landowner, planning authority, facility provider and partner.
“The financial climate facing Scottish local authorities presents considerable challenge for the future. Facility provision and the role that we can play is moving from direct provision to partnership work with a clear community focus to delivery and, where appropriate, management.”
She added: “The concept now requires full examination to explore how best to take it forward. This would require phasing and elements of reduction, but the council will be keen to support the development in all the ways that we can, as a partner, within the financial constraints that we face.”
Edinburgh-based consultants PMR Leisure were tasked by the club with helping prepare a feasibility study and business plan, as well as negotiations with local groups.
The new centre, named the Catto Park Community and Sports Hub, would feature a range of new indoor facilities including a sports hall, dance studio, fitness gym and boxing ring. There would also be space for a day centre for adults with learning and physical needs, which would be run by the local Willowbank charity.
It is proposed that visitors can enter the first floor of the new complex over a bridge from Balmoor Terrace.
Outside, there are plans for a new synthetic pitch for rugby and football, as well as an upgraded running track.
The Balmoor Stadium pitch would remain where it is, although other facilities at the site would be demolished to make way for the project.
