A massive 90.8% of readers of The Press and Journal believe shops across the north and north-east should shut on Boxing Day.

The P&J has already highlighted some of the retailers who will remain closed on the public holiday to allow staff to spend time with loved ones.

Shop workers’ trade union Usdaw wants all retail outlets to close.

We asked readers: “Do you think retailers should be shut on Boxing Day?”

The result was clear, with 90.08% voting yes and 9.92% saying no.

Home Bargains, Iceland and Aldi are all keeping their shutters down on December 26.

They will be joined by Next, well known for its Boxing Day sale, in both Aberdeen’s Bon Accord Centre and Inverness’ Eastgate shopping centre.

The story drummed up interest with a flurry of social media comments from readers.

Readers react

Posting on Facebook, Sandra Robertson said: “Xmas is a time to spend with kids and family. Give the shop workers a break at Xmas.”

Tara Kennedy said: “The little shops that we now have in Aberdeen should be shut.”

Danny Forsyth said: “Yes, let everyone enjoy Christmas with their family and mates – to be honest, there’s practically nothing in the town centre anymore.”

Angela Wilson agreed, saying: “Close them for 3 days, give staff a well-deserved break.”

The comments were warmly welcomed by reader Linda Robertson who commented: “From a retail worker… to those who say closed… thank you.”

Usdaw Aberdeen area organiser Kate Cumming thanked readers for their support.

Ms Cumming added: “It strengthens our case. It shows members of the public are supportive and the response was fantastic.

“I thought the numbers might be quite high but I didn’t expect it to be quite as big.

“I think it’s amazing you have highlighted the issue.”

Marks & Spencer in the Eastgate will also close but it’s not yet known if the high street giant’s Aberdeen stores and others in the north-east will follow suit.

Asda and Morrisons have confirmed all of their stores across the region will open on Boxing Day.

A spokeswoman for Lidl said it was still to confirm plans.

Usdaw deputy general-secretary Dave McCrossen said: “Every worker should have a day off on Boxing Day and nobody should have to lose pay because their store is closed.

“We will continue to make the case for a proper break at Christmas, for all of our members.”
