North-east MPs have thrown their weight behind the region’s bid to win a landmark City Deal from the UK Government.

They called last night for the entire community to show “vision” and “unite” behind the proposals tabled by the local authorities.

Frank Doran, Labour MP for Aberdeen North, said: “I think the City Deal is extremely important to the future of Aberdeen city in particular, as the oil capital of Europe.

“It will allow the two local authorities to tackle a number of infrastructure problems which have made life difficult for not just the city council and the oil and gas industry, but the whole community of Aberdeen.

“Resolution of some of the transport issues, for example, and a host of other issues. The investment that allows will make a huge difference.

“Given the importance of Aberdeen to the Scottish and the UK economy, I hope the chancellor will see the need to give the city the opportunity to make that investment.”

Sir Malcolm Bruce, deputy Liberal Democrat leader and Gordon MP, said: “It obviously requires cross parties and all interest groups to call for it to happen.

“It needs to unite everybody, including the business community.

“It’s an opportunity perhaps to show a bit of vision for the city and shire, which I think people will recognise is needed.

“I’m very hopeful that it will be possible for the government to agree it in principle before the election.”
