A north-east dog charity is hoping to raise more than £3,000 to cover the medical bills of an injured greyhound.
Seven-month-old Millie was picked up by the Maud-based charity Give a Greyhound a Home (Gagah) two months ago with a broken foot.
There are now concerns that Millie’s rising vets bills could prevent her from receiving the best medical treatment available.
Liz Bennett, of Memsie, near Fraserburgh, has been taking care of Millie since the charity Gagah took on the dog.
Mrs Bennett said the cost of keeping the dog was rising every day and estimated the total bill for her vet treatment will be around £3,500.
She added that Millie’s previous owner had contacted Gagah after the greyhound first became injured during a scuffle with another dog in her kennel.
However, by then the damage to the dog’s foot had already been done.
“By the time we got her the bones had healed, but in all the wrong places. Consequently, she was walking on the side of the paw because that’s how the bones had set,” Mrs Bennett said.
“We got her down to a specialist in Fife and he re-broke the bones that had set and put in 22 pins to straighten them out.
“She came back here, but there was always the risk of infection. In might come to amputation in the end.
“But I got word this morning that they’ve put dressings back on and they are monitoring her. So far, so good, but it’s going to be a long process.”
Mrs Bennett added: All the time, the costs are increasing. And it’s not just the specialist’s fees – every two days, when she’s back, we’ll have to be taking her to the vet in Methlick for check-ups.” she said.
“She’s had to go back down to Fife this week because the wound got infected. It’s awful, you can imagine what the cost is going to be.”
Donations to help cover Millie’s recovery can be made on Gagah’s website www.gagah.co.uk.
