The sister of one of the greatest rock drummers of all time has signed up as a supporter of a north-east animal haven.

Deborah Bonham – whose late brother John was Led Zeppelin’s drummer – has become a patron of the Willows Animal Sanctuary in Aberdeenshire.

A respected musician in her own right, she said she was “thrilled” to be able to help Willows.

Her guitarist husband Paul has also become a patron.

Ms Bonham said: “Peter and I are absolutely thrilled to become patrons of this amazing charity.

“I have always had a strong love for Scotland, as did my mother and father.

“We often had family holidays there when we were young so I have a lot of happy memories.

“So it makes total sense to me to be involved with a Scottish charity and give something back for the welcome and love I’ve been shown there.

“We need charities like Willows who connect animals with people, especially animals and people who haven’t had the greatest start in life.

“If we can play a part in this worthy cause in any way it will be our absolute honour.”

The husband and wife duo, who perform in their own band, have taken in rescued animals of their own – including four ex-racehorses.

A spokeswoman for Willows, which is based between New Pitsligo and Strichen in the Buchan, added: “Deborah and Peter have been helping Willows for a while now, it is fantastic news to have them ‘officially’ join the team.”

Existing patrons of the animal sanctuary include former Queen vocalist Paul Rodgers and his wife Cynthia.

The musician, who lives in Canada, became a fan of the charity after hearing about the plight of one of its many residents in 2008.

Piglet Babe hit the headlines when she fell off a lorry on her way to market – outside Willows’ gates.

Mr Rodgers contacted the centre and asked to sponsor 13 animals – including Babe – as Christmas presents for his nieces and nephews.

The charity currently cares for about 200 animals.
