Bikers are aiming to raise thousands of pounds for a north-east cancer charity on a tour of the Scottish coastline.

A team of 20 fund-raisers from Bikers for Ucan set off on the Wrang Ride Roon fundraiser from Duthie Park on Thursday.

The motorcyclists will travel more than 1,300 miles to the Scottish Borders, Stranraer, Kyle of Lochalsh, Skye and Thurso before returning to Aberdeen tomorrow.

Last year, the Lang Ride Roon – the same route in reverse – raised more than £14,000 for the charity.

One of the organisers, Richard Schofield, was diagnosed with prostate cancer five years ago.

He has helped organise several fundraising bike rides to raise awareness of urological cancers and give something back to the charity.

Mr Schofield said: “I’d like to say a big thanks to all the riders and sponsors who are doing this in aid of Ucan. These riders will be paying for all their fuel and accommodation costs out of their own pockets as well as raising funds.”

UCAN was launched in late 2005 to raise awareness of prostate, testicular, kidney and bladder cancers, reinforce the importance of early diagnosis and self-checking, and support patients and their families.

The first of its kind in Scotland, the UCAN Care Centre at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary’s ward 209 is manned by staff who are on hand to give advice to patients on all aspects of dealing with cancer.

All the money raised will go to ward 209.

Fundraising manager Fiona JD Pearson said: “Events like this really help to raise the profile of the charity which in turn helps to raise awareness of urological cancers.

“We would like to wish them all well, travel safely and have fun and we hope the sun shines”.
