Campaign launched to light up Fraserburgh for Christmas

A fresh campaign has been launched to ensure a north-east port is lit up with Christmas cheer this year.

Oor Braw Broch was set up by mother and daughter duo Carolyn and Emma-Jayne May in an effort to guarantee that

Fraserburgh will have a Christmas tree come December.

The pair are also seeking to raise enough money to reinstate the town’s beloved festive light display and avoid a bleak midwinter.

It comes after the Fraserburgh Forward Business Association, which previously oversaw the annual Christmas display, folded earlier this year.

The group needs to raise more than £2,500 in the next two months to make their Christmas dream a reality.

Mrs May said: “The money we’re looking for at the moment is £1,500 to get the Christmas tree up. If we can get a tree up then there’s a focal point for Christmas which is a boost.”

A further £1,000 would need to be raised to fund Christmas lights for the shopping district in the north-east town.

Mrs May added: “It’s just the two of us at the moment but we’re trying to recruit new members.”

The Oor Braw Broch campaign has so far raised £800 from carrier bag collections and a donation by Fraserburgh Community Church from their sale of burgers at the town’s Super Saturday.

The Mays are also setting up an JustGiving page to support their cause. The site, which will go live next week, will allow locals to pitch in with the festive effort.

Each year, Broad Street is closed to traffic on the last shopping day before Christmas to allow for a parade and a flying visit from Santa.
