Tragic Bailey Gwynne died of a stab wound to the chest, his death certificate has revealed.
The 16-year-old was rushed to hospital after he was found seriously injured at Cults Academy in Aberdeen last month.
It was originally believed he had been injured in the stomach, but the official cause of death has been listed as a “penetrating sharp force injury to his chest”.
The document also reveals he died at 3.20pm, nearly two hours after the alarm was first raised at the school on October 28.
Another 16-year-old boy has been charged with Bailey’s murder, and has since appeared in court.
The youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons due to his age, is also accused of being in possession of a “bladed” weapon and an “offensive weapon” while on the grounds of a school.
On Friday, his legal team attempted to have him released on bail so he could stay at home with his family until his next court appearance.
However, the bid was rejected by a sheriff – and now his solicitor Peter Shepherd is aiming to lodge a formal appeal in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, Bailey’s family have announced his funeral will be held in private.
They also thanked the local community for their support.
“Following the sad loss of Bailey, a private funeral will be held,” a notice released on Monday said.
“Bailey’s family would like to thank the community for their kindness and support at this time.”
After the tragedy, hundreds of pupils gathered have since gathered to lay flowers and hand-written notes outside the school.
The fifth year pupil was described by friends as a quiet teenager, and a fitness enthusiast who had dreams of joining the Royal Marines when he was older.
His devastated family, who live at Maryculter, have paid tribute to the people of the north-east for the support they have received.
And Cults Academy head teacher Anna Muirhead said: “The whole school has been shocked and saddened by the death of a pupil at our school. He was a very gentle and caring boy, with many friends.
“Everybody in the school is devastated and our thoughts are with his friends and family at what is a very difficult time.”
