Winter arrived this weekend… But warmer temperatures due by Friday

Winter arrived in earnest across much of Scotland this weekend as blizzards blanketed much of the country with snow.

Although most of Friday night’s snowfall was gone by Saturday morning, many woke up on Sunday morning to a fresh coat of the white stuff after an evening of heavy flurries.

Slippery conditions were reported on roads across the north and the north-east of Scotland, resulting in a number of traffic accidents.

One woman was taken to hospital in Aberdeenshire yesterday morning following a two-vehicle collision.

She went to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with “slight injuries” following the accident on the B9170 Oldmeldrum to Inverurie road.

And the A98 New Pitsligo to Fraserburgh road was closed at Longmanhill for a number of hour after a three-car collision.

No one was hurt in the incident, however both carriageways of the major route were closed while emergency services cleared debris from the scene.

Low temperatures and snow blanketed much of the north and north-east, but the Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland avoided most of the heavier snowfall.

The cloudy evening on Saturday helped to prevent temperatures from dipping too low, yet clear skies above Aberdeenshire last night resulted in some of the lowest thermometer measurements in Scotland this weekend, with some areas as low as -7C.

None the less, snowman builders had better make the most of the white stuff while it’s still here, because meteorologists have predicted warmer temperatures and rain this week.

A forecaster for the Met Office said: “Braemar, Aboyne and the likes are likely to be the coldest, because they are so high up.

“We’ve got cloud coming in on Monday with some rain spreading in from the north-west, and we’ll see a gradual recovery of temperatures – probably up to around 7C or 8C by the evening.

“It turns showery as we go into Tuesday and Wednesday, and it will be a bit wintry over the mountains and higher hills, but there will be nothing snowy in the lower levels, although it will be slightly colder than usual.

“And towards the end of the week, it might turn a bit milder than we usually have at this time of year, with temperatures rising to double figures during the day.”
