North-east police issue Christmas safety message

Police are on the scene

Police are urging people to stay safe while out celebrating Christmas and Hogmanay.

Officers will be carrying out additional evening patrols in towns and villages including Inverurie, Aboyne, Stonehaven, and Ellon.

The patrols are part of Operation Sandside, an initiative which has been launched to combat violent crime.

Chief Inspector Richard Craig, area commander for Aberdeenshire South, said: “The festive season is a fantastic period of the year and a time of celebration for communities across the North East. We want to encourage people to enjoy themselves, have fun with their friends and families, but to be safe and responsible.

“Following a few simple safety tips can help ensure that your night out is one to remember and not one you will regret. Make sure you leave plenty of time for your journeys, know how you are getting home and make sure you are dressed appropriately for this time of year. Always be aware of your alcohol consumption, know your limits and remember to look out for your friends.

“We find that alcohol too often plays a central part in crime at this time of the year, as it increases the risk of becoming a victim and also makes individuals more likely to offend. We will have additional officers on weekend and evening patrols and will be on hand to assist members of the public with any concerns they have.

“We want to ensure that the very small minority do not have the opportunity to disrupt the celebrations for the vast majority who wish to go out and enjoy the festive experience across the region.”
