Bicycles should only be bought from a reputable dealer after the work of the cycle stealing gang came to light, police said last night.

Sergeant Gillian Gauld led the investigation into the activities of the outfit, which has been targeting high-end bicycles in the city.

Thomas MacDonald was sentenced at Aberdeen Sheriff Court this week after admitting his part in the stolen-to-order operation.

Sgt Gauld said: “This inquiry involved a great deal of work by local officers involved in Operation RAC, which is a national campaign to crack down on acquisitive crime and housebreakings.

“The result of this inquiry and the subsequent sentence handed down to MacDonald highlights the dedication and commitment by the team involved.

“We’d like to take this opportunity to remind residents that if they are buying a particularly expensive bike and they want to prevent any opportunity for it to be stolen, that they should take a photo, note any serial numbers and any distinguishing features, and – most importantly – buy a proper lock.

“We cannot stress enough to people the importance of locking up and securing any sheds or outbuildings in order to protect their property and, if they are thinking of buying a new bike, I’d urge people to purchase one from a reputable dealer as well.

“We would continue to encourage members of the public to report any suspicious persons or behaviour, and ensure they place the security of their property at the forefront of their minds.”
