Fun’s not over yet for Aberdeen World Cup sensations

They exchanged banter with Joe Hart, came within yards of a triumphant Luis Suarez and set the internet ablaze when their Scotland tops were spotted on national TV.

But the fun is not over yet for the four Aberdonians who represented Scotland as part of the Uruguay camp at their team’s World Cup clash with England.

The men were picked up by cameras behind the goal at the Sao Paolo stadium during the South American team’s Suarez-inspired 2-1 victory over Roy Hodgson’s men.

For brothers Michael and Scott Anderson, Lewis McAra and Kenny Macgregor – all from Aberdeen – the trip to Brazil started as a pipe dream and, then became a reality when their ticket application was successful.

The quartet were amazed by the online storm they created on Thursday evening, with help from another saltire-waving Scot, believed to be from Glasgow, when they were caught by cameras following Uruguay’s win.

Scott, from Cove, said: “We are just four guys who saved up to come watch football at the World Cup, we never thought we’d get this much attention.

“The four of us joked about coming to the World Cup over a year ago and just applied for tickets, we had no idea of the games or where we’d be sitting, the draw gave us an England game and the tickets landed us in the Uruguay section.

“We were in the front row and shared a joke with (England goalkeeper) Joe Hart when he saw us with the Scotland flag as well.

“The atmosphere was unbelievable and the amount of people from all over the world wanting photos because we were wearing Scotland shirts was crazy.

“All fans – South American and England fans – were very kind towards us. It was an amazing experience.”

The group will now head from Sao Paolo to Rio De Janeiro for two more matches.

Scott added: “We are here until July 30. We have tickets for two more games, we’ll be third row behind the goals for Chile v Holland and seven rows back for Belgium v South Korea.”
