A north-east MSP is inviting her fellow parliamentarians to support the campaign for an Aberdeen City Region Deal to boost the north-east economy.

Liberal Democrat Alison McInnes has put down a motion in the Scottish Parliament which has already received cross-party support.

Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire councils, backed by local businesses including the oil and gas sector, put forward a £2.9billion, 20-year investment plan which needs the support of the UK and Scottish government.

The idea is similar to that pioneered by Glasgow and other local authorities in the Clydebank area which netted £1.3billion.

Ms McInnes said a city region deal for Aberdeen and the surrounding area could boost jobs and growth, deliver much needed investment in infrastructure and improve connectivity.

“Liberal Democrats in the UK Government have already been behind the delivery of city deals across the country, including one for Glasgow,” she said.

“Now we too have a real opportunity to secure extra powers and finance that could unlock growth and deliver significant benefits for businesses and residents alike.

“The bid is being led by the local authorities and partners including our universities and college, transport organisations, and some of the biggest names in business such as Oil and Gas UK.

“I hope all parties at Holyrood will join them in recognising the strength and potential of the north-east economy by signing my motion and backing the bid.”
