Travel disruption as heavy rainfall batters the north-east

Roads across the north-east have been left under water due to the torrential rain.

Heavy rains hit the region in the early hours of this morning after the Met Office issued a yellow warning for much of the north and north-east.

The heavy rain is expected to last for the majority of the morning.

A flood alert has been issued for Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire by Sepa, warning that heavy, persistent rain over this morning would lead to flooding from surface water and small watercourses.

There are various local road closures, and public transport delays and cancellations – with all motorists being urged to drive with care and leave extra time for their journeys.

Ellon and Inverurie have been particularly badly hit.

Police advised drivers to avoid the Toll of Birness on the A90 Ellon to Fraserburgh road due to flooding.

The road has now been cleared.

The A975 Newburgh to Cruden Bay road has been badly flooded, with deep water right across both carriageways.

Stagecoach has advised customers the 53 Aberdeen-Ellon service has been delayed because of the inclement weather and is not currently running.

ScotRail said services between Aberdeen and Inverness/Inverurie have been delayed.

The track was inspected and the line remains open again, however 5mph speed restriction in place in the affected area.

The Oldmeldrum to Inverurie and Kingseat to Newmachar roads are impassable due to water on the road.

In Inverurie itself, the area around the high street has been badly flooded and is closed beside North Street and Blackhall Road.

Police have also reported standing water on the A96 Aberdeen to Inverness road, between Elgin and Brodie.

A statement online said: “Police Scotland would like to advise drivers of standing water on the A96 between Elgin and Brodie which is causing hazardous conditions.”
