An Aberdeen school worker who raped a stranger as she returned home from a night out has been locked up for almost five years.
Jeffery Oviasogie pounced on the terrified 29-year-old woman in the city’s Bon Accord Terrace Gardens, during the early hours of September 26 last year.
The 21-year-old then left his weeping victim curled up on the ground but was soon recognised due to his distinctive baseball cap.
Oviasogie was today locked up for four years and eight months at the High Court in Glasgow.
He had pled guilty to a rape charge at a hearing in June.
Judge John McCormick told him: “You assaulted and raped a lone female as she walked home in Aberdeen.
“You used force to hold her down and ignored her screams for help.”
Oviasogie will also be monitored for a further three years on his release.
The sex attacker was a support worker at Camphill school for children with additional support needs in Aberdeen at the time of the rape.
He had been living in the UK since 2018 but his visitor visa expired six months before the attack.
The Nigerian had submitted an “application for leave to remain” although it is not known how that progressed.
The victim had been on a night out with friends at two bars before going to the Underground nightclub in Aberdeen.
The group then left at 3am and went home separately.
The woman was walking when Oviasogie suddenly came up and started talking to her.
He then tailed her as she continued into Bon Accord Terrace Gardens.
Prosecutor John McElroy said: “She began to feel uncomfortable. As she walked along a steep path, the woman was aware of Oviasogie behind her.
“Her next memory is of being on her back on a muddy area with him on top of her. She was screaming for help, but she was unable to move beneath his weight. Oviasogie told her to ‘shut up’.”
Mr McElroy said the school worker went on to rape the woman as he held her down.
The advocate depute told the court: “She continued screaming and shouting. She was petrified”.
Caught because of his baseball cap
A man nearby heard the cries and then spotted Oviasogie, also of Aberdeen, on top of the woman.
As the rapist fled, he was noticed to be wearing a distinctive red baseball cap.
Mr McElroy added: “The woman remained on the ground, crying and curled into a ball”.
Three students also passed and one alerted police to the hysterical victim.
Officers discovered Oviasogie in Aberdeen’s Justice Mill Lane around an hour later, still wearing the cap.
His jeans and trainers were also mud-stained but he denied being involved in the attack.
‘He often thinks of the victim’
Edith Forrest, defending, said: “In relation to the incident, he was out after work with colleagues.
“He said he consumed a lot of alcohol, which he was not used to indulging in.
“He accepts he was showing off to a degree to his peers, which demonstrates a level of immaturity at the time.
“He says he often thinks of the victim and the impact this will have had on her.”
Oviasogie will remain on the sex offenders register indefinitely.
